Autumn in Brunei: more river and more rain

Autumn (September–November) in Brunei is the build-up to the wetter months: afternoons fill earlier with thunderclouds, river levels rise noticeably and some dirt tracks in the interior go soft. You won’t see a crisp temperate autumn palette here; instead the season alters movement — long river trips start to feel like the sensible option as lowland roads become soggy and daylight remains almost constant year-round.

How Brunei moves at human scale

With fewer than half a million people the country’s towns never sprawl; Bandar Seri Begawan functions as the hub for banking, shopping and flights, while outside the capital coastal roads and short ferry runs are the quickest ways between settlements. Public transport is limited: taxis and private hire fill the gap, rental cars are the usual choice for independent travel, and many inland journeys still use river launches when the weather allows. Cards work easily in the capital; smaller kampung shops prefer Brunei dollars, and Singapore dollars are commonly accepted at par.

Daily rhythms, religion and public manners in autumn

Islam shapes the public week here: Friday midday prayers create a pause in government offices and community life, and you will hear the call to prayer from the city mosques several times a day. Modest dress is the norm — women wearing tudung and men in traditional Baju Melayu or sarong on formal days are common sights — so cover shoulders and knees when visiting religious or official spaces. Photography of royal residences, some government sites and military installations is sensitive; ask before pointing a lens at people in kampung areas.

Eating and routine food habits

Meals follow Malay rhythms: early breakfasts of nasi lemak or kopi and kaya are popular, midday lunches are often quick and include rice or noodle dishes, and evening is the main family meal. Street stalls and hawker-style food are concentrated in Bandar Seri Begawan and larger towns; in smaller settlements cooking and sharing food by family and neighbours remains the dominant pattern, especially when heavy rains keep people home.
